Sex Education features about twenty recurring characters in its 4 Seasons, available on Netflix between 2019 and 2023. The series addresses sex without taboos or vulgarity, from a teenager’s perspective, featuring a genuine mix of cultures, sexual orientations, and social backgrounds.

Synopsis of the series *Sex Education*
Sex Education takes place at the high school Moordale. It all starts with Maeve Wiley, a rebellious student who lives alone and is short on money. She spots a real gold mine at Otis Milburn, a quiet classmate who really knows his stuff when it comes to sex education.
Normal: Otis is the son of Jean Milburn, a famous sex therapist. He knows the theory inside and out, but remains stuck in his own love life. Together, Maeve and Otis set up a underground clinic sex therapy at the high school, where each student pays to receive counseling and work through their insecurities.

The Main Characters
- Otis Milburn (played by Asa Butterfield) : A reserved and shy teenager, he is uncomfortable with the fact that his mother is a renowned sexologist. Yet he is unaware of his own talent: helping others. Once he discovers this gift, he gains confidence and finds fulfillment in his role as a counselor.
- Maeve Wiley (played by Emma Mackey) : rebellious and strong-willed, she doesn't care what others think. Sarcastic yet empathetic, she came up with the idea for the firm after catching Otis helping a friend. The consultations are mainly a way for him to make money.
- Eric Effiong (played by Ncuti Gatwa) : the best friend of’Otis, brimming with joie de vivre, a believer, and openly gay. His journey through faith, family, and identity is one of the most touching in the series.
- Jean Milburn (played by Gillian Anderson) : the mother of’Otis, a candid and open-minded sex therapist. She brings a lot of humor and real depth to discussions about sex and education.
- Aimee Gibbs (played by Aimee Lou Wood) : the popular girl at school, who is close to Maeve. At first, she hides their friendship to protect her reputation, but her story arc takes a significant turn over the course of the seasons.
- Adam Groff (played by Connor Swindells) : Portrayed as the high school bully, he hides deep emotional pain stemming from his family situation. Son of the principal Michael Groff, he is the very first customer of’Otis and is growing into a more level-headed and responsible young man.
- Jackson Marchetti (played by Kedar Williams-Stirling) : the high school heartthrob, who is in love with Maeve. He asks for advice from Otis to win her over, even though at first she sees him as nothing more than a one-night stand.

Centered around this core, the series created by Laurie Nunn features many supporting characters who become more prominent with each passing season.
- Ruby Matthews (Mimi Keene) : A popular girl, she reveals a much more nuanced personality as the seasons go by.
- Lily Iglehart (Tanya Reynolds) : A student with a passion for science fiction, she approaches her sexuality with great spontaneity.
- Ola Nyman (Patricia Allison) : daughter of Jakob Nyman, she becomes a love interest of’Otis.
- Michael Groff (Alistair Petrie) : the strict principal of Moordale and father of’Adam.
- Cal Bowman (Dua Saleh) : character non-binary that comes from the Season 3.
- Hope Haddon (Jemima Kirke) : new director of Moordale, she also makes an appearance in Season 3.
- Isaac (George Robinson) : neighbor of Maeve, he becomes a key figure in her romantic choices.
Each of these characters has their own way of addressing taboos and overcoming them. Sex Education is primarily intended for teenagers, but adults also get plenty out of it.
