The jump potion lets you jump much higher than usual in Minecraft. It increases your jump height, extends the distance of your jumps, and reduces fall damage. It’s useful for clearing obstacles, climbing mountains, or quickly escaping a mob. Here’s its exact effect, its recipe in the still, and all its variants.
1) What is the purpose of the jump potion?
The jump potion increase your jump height in Minecraft. You jump higher, clear taller obstacles, and take less fall damage.
This ability is very useful in everyday situations. It helps you climb a mountain, reach a rooftop, or scale a cliff in just a few jumps. It’s also useful for escaping a mob or getting through a hole that’s a little too wide.
The Jump Potion comes in two levels. Level I significantly boosts your jump height: you go from about 1.25 blocks to nearly 2.5 blocks high. Level II, the Jump Potion II, takes the effect even further, reaching a height of about 3.5 blocks. The higher the level, the more the fall damage is reduced.
The difference between Level I and Level II is therefore clear: Level I lets you jump over two blocks, while Level II lets you clear three blocks at once. Whether you're in combat or exploring, this increase in jump height really changes the game.
From a technical standpoint, its internal ID is minecraft:potion with the Jump effect (in English Potion of Leaping). It works the same way across the editions Java, Bedrock, Xbox and PlayStation.
The opposite of this effect also exists: the slowing potion slows down your movement speed and may limit your ability to jump. If you're looking to move faster on the ground, also check out the speed potion. To reduce fall damage without boosting your jumps, the potion of slow fall is a useful alternative.
2) How can I get a jump potion without brewing it?
You don't have to brew your own jump potion. There are several alternative sources in the game.
- Witches may drop jump potions when they die, although the loot is still rare.
- Some chests in the dungeons or fortresses of the Nether may contain them, depending on the version of the game.
- In some versions, priest-villagers sell potions in exchange for emeralds.
In most cases, making your own potion is still the most reliable and fastest method.
3) How do you make the jump potion?
First and foremost, you'll need vials. They're the basic container for any potion.
Items needed to make them: 3 glasses (uses a workbench).
Here's how to arrange them to make your vials:

Now that you have your vials, you'll also need a still. This tool is used to brew all your potions. Without it, you won't be able to make any potions on your own.
Items needed to craft it: 3 stones and 1 stick of blaze (To get a Blaze Stick, kill blazes in a fortress in the Nether).
Here's how to arrange the items to get it.

Next, place your still in your base. Right-click to open its interface. This is where you brew your potions. You can actually brew up to 3 at the same time. Don't forget to fill your vials with water.
Where can I find the ingredients?
- The Nether Wart is located in the fortresses of the Nether, near the fortress stairs. You can also grow it if you already have some.
- The rabbit's foot It is obtained by killing rabbits. They appear in plains, flower forests, taiga, and desert biomes.
- The blaze powder is obtained by crafting a staff of blaze. It is used as fuel for the still.
Steps to Make Level I Jump Potion (3 minutes)
Ingredients needed: 1 wart from the Nether and 1 rabbit leg.
Everything happens in the still's interface. You'll need blaze powder as fuel. Place it as shown in the image below.

Once everything is set up, follow these steps.
- First, combine the Nether Wart and the vial of water to make a strange potion (the base for almost all potions):

- Next, add the rabbit leg:

Your Level I 3-minute jump potion is ready. You can now upgrade it as needed.
4) How can I improve the jump potion?
There are three main upgrades to the basic jump potion.
- Add some powder of redstone to extend the duration to 8 minutes.
- Add some gunpowder to make it disposable.
- Add some shimmer powder to advance to Level II.
To make a 1-minute-30-second Jump Potion II, take your Level I 3-minute jump potion and add some glowing powder:

| Extended Jump Potion (Level I) | Same effect as Level I | 8 minutes | Redstone Powder |
| Jump Potion II | Jump height greatly increased, fall damage greatly reduced | 1 min 30 | luminous powder |

5) Other useful variants
- The single-use jump potion You can create it by adding gunpowder to your jump potion. You then throw the vial to apply the effect to another player or yourself. The duration remains the same; only the method of application changes.
- You can also nest the effect inside an arrow. A jump arrow passes the effect on to the player or mob it hits, which is useful in ranged combat.
- The Level II single-use jump potion is obtained in the same way: sprinkle gunpowder on the Level II jump potion.
- The long-lasting jump potion It is created by adding a dragon's breath to a single-use jump potion. This variant creates a cloud on the ground that applies the effect to anyone who walks through it.
To round out your arsenal, don't forget the potion of strength to increase your damage in combat, by healing potion to regain health, or even at the potion of weakness to weaken your enemies.
