If your phone has just been lost or stolen, every minute counts.
Reinstall WhatsApp with your same phone number : The old device will automatically disconnect, and you can retrieve your WhatsApp account as well as your data in a few simple steps.
Step 1: Block your SIM card
The very first thing to do: call your mobile operator and calls for the Immediate blocking of your SIM card.
Without it, the thief cannot receive the SMS verification code that gives you access to your WhatsApp account.
At the same time, you can remotely disable WhatsApp by sending an email to https://www.whatsapp.com/contact/noclient?lang=fr_FR.
Subject “Mon téléphone a été volé” Where “J’ai perdu mon téléphone et je souhaiterais le bloquer”, and enter your full phone number, including the area code in the message body. WhatsApp will then disable your compromised account while you get a new SIM card, thereby protecting your personal data.
Please note: This way, you retain control over your conversations, even if you can't yet locate cell phone stolen.
Step 2: Get a new SIM card with the same number
Since WhatsApp is linked to your phone number for verification, you'll need a a new SIM card that keeps the exact same number. The steps are simple:
- Call your mobile operator (or stop by the store) and report that your phone has been lost or stolen.
- Request a new SIM card linked to your usual number.
- Insert it into your new device once you receive it.
Next, Download WhatsApp since Play Store (Android) or the’App Store (iOS). Enter your number: WhatsApp will send you a 6-digit code via text message on your new SIM card.
Two important points at this stage:
- If you had enabled the two-step verification, WhatsApp also asks you for your personal PIN. Without it, you won't be able to access your WhatsApp account, so be sure to remember it.
- As soon as your number is activated on the new device, the old phone is automatically logged out. The thief loses all access to your conversations and data.
Once your account is verified, WhatsApp automatically searches for a backup and offers to restore your chats. That’s what you’ll see in the next step.
Step 3: Restore your chat backups
After verifying the number, WhatsApp detects automatically your most recent backup and offers to restore it. The restoration varies depending on whether you're on android Where iOS.
And contrary to popular belief, you don't no encryption key required to restore, unless you had manually enabled end-to-end encrypted backup.
Restore Messages on Android (Google Drive)
On android, your data and history are stored on Google Drive, related to your Google account. Here are the steps :
- Download and install WhatsApp, then open the app.
- Verify your number using the code you received via text message.
- Log in to the same Google account than the one used for the backup.
- Press Restore when WhatsApp detects your Google Drive backup.
Warning: Use exactly the same Google account, otherwise the restoration will fail and your old conversations will remain missing.
Restore Messages on iOS (iCloud)
On an iPhone, your data and messages are backed up to iCloud, combined with your Apple ID. Restoration since iCloud Follow these steps:
- Install WhatsApp from the’App Store, then open it.
- Verify your number using the 6-digit code you received via text message.
- Log in to the same iCloud account than before.
- Touches Restore the chat history when WhatsApp detects the backup iCloud.
If no backup is detected
Even without a recent backup, WhatsApp will restore your contacts, but your past chat history will still be missing. Be sure to check manually before giving up.
On android, go to Settings > Discussions > Save Discussions : WhatsApp scans your Google Drive and displays the most recent backup.
On iOS, follow the same path in Settings to check your backup iCloud and your related data. If you had saved a local backup on a computer, first transfer it to your phone, then start the restore from that same menu.
