The Kalahari Desert Safari in the Kalahari, the desert that isn't a desert The dunes of the Kalahari may be less impressive than those of the Namib in terms of size, but their intense red color and the vegetation present make them a must-see. The Kalahari's rich fauna includes numerous antelopes, as well as small mammals such as meerkats, and nocturnal animals such as otocyons and aardvarks. Recommended duration: 1 to 3 nights The vast Kalahari Desert stretches east and south across Namibia and into neighboring Botswana and South Africa. In this semi-desert region, red dunes alternate with dry riverbeds planted with immense acacia trees. But unlike the Namib, this is not a waterless desert: it rains regularly and the central part is planted with savannah, to which a feathery grass (esparto) gives a silvery appearance when it undulates in the wind. The Kalahari used to be inhabited only by the Bushmen, a people of small nomadic hunters with fair skin and a curious click tongue, who roamed the desert in search of game and plants. Sadly, only a tiny minority have preserved this ancestral way of life. The others have joined the ranks of white farmers as hunters or herdsmen. But their ability to read the desert has remained intact, and they are the best trackers in southern Africa. A safari in their company is guaranteed to be a fascinating experience, as you learn to decipher tracks and footprints. THE SEASONS FOR A SAFARI IN THE KALAHARI The Kalahari is accessible all year round, but it is at its most beautiful during the rainy season, when the savannah is covered with green grass and the trees are in bloom. From October to April it's very hot during the day (up to 40°), but the evenings are mild, while from May to September the nights are cold (it can freeze in the desert) and the days pleasant. NOT TO BE MISSED - the most beautiful part of the Namibian Kalahari is in the Mariental region, with its backdrop of red dunes - the Tsumkwe region offers wonderful encounters with bushmen. - some meerkat families are impregnated (they remain wild but are accustomed to the presence of man) and an excursion to their territory is a wonderful opportunity for sharing. ACCESS AND FREQUENTATION From Windhoek: Mariental +/- 255 km (approx. 2 h 45) From Sesriem: Mariental +/- 280 km (approx. 4 h 00) From Fish River Canyon: 380 km (approx. 5 h 00) The Mariental region, with its red dunes, is quite busy.
